How to Get Back on Track After Falling Off (Without Starting Over)
Missed a week? A month? Why restarting a habit feels harder than starting, and the one mindset shift that makes getting back on track far easier.

You had a routine. It was working. Then a busy week, an illness or just a bad few days happened, and now it feels like you're back at zero.
Here's the thing most people miss: restarting is a different skill from starting. When you start something new, you have energy and novelty on your side. When you restart, you have neither. You also carry the weight of "I already failed at this once."
Why "just start again" doesn't work
The usual advice is to pick up exactly where you left off. But your old routine was built for the version of you who had momentum. Jumping straight back to full speed often ends in a second, more discouraging fall.
- The gap makes the old plan feel too big.
- Guilt makes you want to "make up" for lost time, so you overload yourself.
- You wait for motivation to come back before acting. It rarely does.

A way back in, not a catch-up day
You do not need to make up for every missed day.
Trying to catch up
- Do extra to repay the gap.
- Return at full speed.
- Wait until motivation arrives.
The old amount may not fit today.
A small return
- Choose a smaller version.
- Show up for that one piece.
- Stop there if that is enough.
Ask: what version of this habit fits today?
The mindset shift: re-entry, not restart
Instead of thinking "I need to start over", think "I need a way back in." A re-entry is deliberately small. Its only job is to prove to yourself that you're back, not to recover everything you missed.
Ask yourself one question: what is the smallest version of this habit I could do today without any resistance? Do that, and stop there. The win is showing up, not the amount you get done.
What comes next
A single small step gets you moving. Staying back on track is a different problem: knowing what to do on day two, what to do when the small step doesn't work, and how to stop the same fall happening again. That's exactly what The Restart Protocol is built to solve.
